If you would have told me that sopranos Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Kathleen Battle ever performed together, I would
have not believed you.  But, to my surprise and joy, I discovered this video on the Internet and find that it the most
beautiful concert performance of the final trio, the Farewell Scene, from Act III of Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier.  Here,
all three singers are at the apex of their careers and voices, singing in impeccable German and Straussian phrasing.
From 1984, here are Dame Kiri Te Kanawa (Marchallin), Katherine Ciesinski (Octavian), and Kathleen Battle
(Sophie) with the American Symphony Orchestra under the direction of James Levine, in a programme hosted by the
late great Brooklynite soprano, Beverly Sills.  If the beauty of Strauss's music can be reduced to its most perfect
example, it would be this.
